How to Create a Website That Works
By Thuva Tharma
All good websites have five things in common: they load fast, they look simple and clean, they avoid self talk, they are easy to use, and they provide useful content. Below, you will learn more about them.
1) Make it load fast
Web users have low attention span. In fact, the average attention span of a user is 5 to 7 seconds. So generally if your website takes more than 10 seconds to load, then the majority of your visitors will simply leave.
Images or graphics take long time to load. So reduce the number of images in your website. Use images only when they serve any useful purpose. Do not use them for decorating purposes. Moreover, you can also reduce the file size of your images to make them load fast.
2) Make it simple and clean
The layout of your website should be simple and clean. A simple layout lets you present information effectively. Furthermore, it invites the visitor to explore more. On the other hand, a complex layout with too many graphics distracts your visitors from focusing on the information. In addition, simple layouts load fast.
3) Avoid self talk
Self talk is talking about how great your company and your services are without concentrating on your prospects and their problems. Avoid self talk at all the time as it drives your visitors away.
Instead, talk about your prospects, their problems, and how you can help. Write in conversational tone. Use the word "you" more often.
4) Make it easy to use
Your website should be easy to use. Your visitors should be able navigate through your website easily to find the information they want.
Your website navigation plays an important role in how easy your website is to use. Vertical and horizontal navigation is common. Many web users are used to them. So use either vertical or horizontal navigation or both. Don't reinvent the wheel. By doing that, you will only confuse your visitors.
In addition, link to relevant pages of your website throughout the content. For example, if you have a webpage describing how to order your services, then you should have links to your "terms & conditions" and "privacy policy" from that webpage.
5) Provide useful content
People use the web to research about the products and services they want to buy. They are looking for useful information to make right purchase decisions. If you don't provide the information they want, then they will go somewhere else, possibly to your competitors. Don't make that fatal mistake.
You need to give your website visitors all the information they want. By doing this, you build trust, gain credibility, and establish yourself as an expert. So when your visitors are ready to buy, they will most likely to choose your services.
